UN-UG is an independent publication covering technology, startups, ICT policy and digital development in Uganda. It is not affiliated with the United Nations, the Government of Uganda or any public institution.
This notice applies to information handled through un-ug.org and communications sent to [email protected]. It does not govern the privacy practices of external websites, platforms or services that may be mentioned, embedded or linked from our articles.
Information That May Reach UN-UG
The information we handle depends on how a reader uses the website.
Information You Send Directly
When you contact UN-UG, you may provide:
your name;
your email address;
your organisation or professional role;
the subject and content of your message;
information included in a correction request;
details about a startup, product, event or technology project;
interview or press information;
documents, images or other files attached to a message;
any additional information you choose to provide.
Please avoid sending passwords, payment information, identification documents, private account credentials or unrelated sensitive personal information.
Editorial Messages and News Tips
Readers, companies, public institutions and other sources may contact us about technology stories, corrections, product announcements, research, events or developments in Uganda’s digital economy.
These communications may contain names, professional details, contact information and supporting material. We use that information to assess the message, verify relevant claims, request clarification and decide whether editorial follow-up is appropriate.
Sending information does not guarantee publication. UN-UG may choose not to use submitted material or may use only the parts necessary for reporting and verification.
Technical Information From Website Visits
Like most websites, un-ug.org may receive limited technical information when a page is opened. This can include:
Internet Protocol address;
browser and device type;
operating system;
approximate location derived from network information;
referring page or website;
pages viewed;
visit time and duration;
interactions with site features;
error, performance and security logs.
This information is generally used to operate the website, detect technical problems, understand overall readership patterns and protect the site from abuse.
UN-UG does not need to know a reader’s identity to analyse general traffic patterns.
Why We Use Information

We do not use information sent for editorial purposes to create personal financial, employment or consumer profiles.

How We Handle Editorial Submissions
Messages sent to a news organisation can require different treatment from ordinary customer-support emails.
UN-UG may preserve relevant editorial communications when they are needed to:
investigate a potential story;

protect the accuracy and integrity of published work;
respond to disputes concerning submitted or published material.
We do not promise that every message will be confidential. Email and ordinary website communications may not be suitable for highly sensitive disclosures.
A source who believes that a message requires special handling should clearly explain the concern before sending unnecessary identifying or confidential material. UN-UG will consider reasonable requests but cannot guarantee anonymity or confidentiality in every situation.
Uploaded or attached material should only be sent by someone who has the right to share it. Do not submit private documents, photographs or personal data about another person without a legitimate reason and appropriate permission.
Comments, Newsletters and New Features
Some website functions may be added, removed or changed over time.
If comments are enabled, information such as a display name, email address, comment text, IP address and anti-spam signals may be processed to publish and moderate comments.
If an email newsletter is introduced, the signup form should explain what messages will be sent and how a subscriber can unsubscribe.
UN-UG will update this notice when a new feature materially changes the types of personal information handled through un-ug.org.
Embedded Content and External Platforms
Articles may include externally hosted videos, social posts, charts, documents or other embedded material.
An embedded item may behave as though the visitor opened the external provider’s website directly. The provider may collect technical information, use cookies or recognise a logged-in account according to its own terms and privacy practices.
UN-UG does not control the data practices of an external platform. Readers who do not want to load an embedded service may be able to block third-party content through browser or privacy settings.
When Information May Be Shared
UN-UG does not sell personal information.
Information may be shared in limited circumstances with:
hosting, security, email, analytics or technical service providers that support the website;
contributors or people working on a relevant story where access is reasonably necessary;
professional advisers where advice is required;
authorities or other parties where disclosure is legally required;
parties involved in protecting the website, its readers or the rights of others;
a successor responsible for the website if the project’s operation or ownership changes.
Service providers may process information in different countries. We aim to limit shared information to what is reasonably necessary for the relevant service or purpose.
How Long Information Is Kept
UN-UG does not apply one retention period to every type of information.
Technical logs may be kept for the period needed for security, maintenance and performance analysis. Routine enquiries may be removed when the conversation is complete and no continuing need exists.
Editorial correspondence, correction records and supporting evidence may be retained longer when they remain relevant to published reporting, source verification, dispute handling or the integrity of the editorial archive.
Information may also be retained where reasonably necessary to establish, exercise or defend rights, respond to a lawful request or prevent repeated abuse.
When information is no longer reasonably required, it may be deleted, anonymised or securely archived, depending on its nature and the systems involved.
Security and Practical Limitations
UN-UG may use organisational and technical measures intended to reduce the risk of unauthorised access, loss, misuse or alteration.
No website, inbox, hosting environment or internet transmission method can be guaranteed completely secure. Readers should therefore avoid sending unnecessary sensitive information through ordinary email or website forms.
If UN-UG becomes aware of a security incident involving personal information, it will assess the circumstances and take steps considered appropriate under the situation and applicable requirements.
Your Privacy Choices
Depending on the information involved and the law that applies, you may ask UN-UG to:
confirm whether information about you is being handled;
provide access to personal information associated with you;
correct inaccurate or incomplete information;
delete information that is no longer needed or should not be retained;
restrict or object to certain uses;
stop using contact information for direct marketing;
explain relevant processing or automated decisions, where applicable;
withdraw consent where processing relies on consent.
Some requests may be limited where information must be retained for journalism, freedom of expression, public interest, security, legal obligations, dispute handling or protection of the rights of others.

Children’s Privacy
UN-UG publishes general-interest technology news and is not designed as an online service specifically for children.
Children should not send personal documents, private contact details or sensitive information through the website. Where parental or guardian involvement is required by applicable law, the relevant permission should be obtained before a child’s personal information is submitted.

Links to Other Websites
UN-UG articles may refer readers to government portals, technology companies, research organisations, event pages, social networks and other external resources.
Following an external link takes the reader away from un-ug.org. UN-UG is not responsible for the security, availability or privacy practices of an external site. Readers should review the privacy information provided by that service before submitting personal data.
Changes to This Notice
This Privacy and Data Notice may be revised when the website introduces new functions, changes its technical tools or updates its data-handling practices.
The date shown at the top of the page indicates the latest published version. Material changes may also be highlighted on the website where appropriate.
Continued use of un-ug.org after an update means that the current version of this notice applies to subsequent website interactions. It does not remove privacy rights that cannot lawfully be waived.
